The Edith Sanford Breast Cancer Foundation is a new endeavor, launched officially in January of 2012 after the announcement of Denny Sanford’s transformational gift and the intent to launch the Edith Sanford movement in August of 2011. Prior to that time, a nonprofit organization within the umbrella of the Sanford Health organization, the Union Hospital Foundation, transferred its assets to a Sanford Health entity, and the name of the Union Hospital Foundation was changed to the Edith Sanford Breast Cancer Foundation to reflect the new activities of the charitable organization.

Sanford Health is the patient care and research partner of the Edith Sanford Breast Cancer Foundation and is the largest rural, nonprofit health care system in the nation with locations in 126 communities in nine states. In addition, Sanford Health is in the process of developing international clinics in Ghana and Mexico. Sanford Health includes 39 hospitals, 140 clinic locations and 1,360 physicians in 81 specialty areas of medicine. With more than 26,000 employees, Sanford Health is the largest employer in North and South Dakota.

With respect to key measures of charitable accountability, the Edith Sanford Breast Cancer Foundation:

  • Spends 100% of private donations on its mission activities (thanks to the generous gift from Denny Sanford, which covers administrative and fundraising costs)
  • Has a governing board of trustees that regularly meets to provide oversight and accountability of operations and staff
  • Has written conflict of interest policies
  • Has its financials audited, as part of a consolidated financial audit of Sanford Health, by an independent accounting firm in accordance with generally accepted accounting principles
  • Makes available its financial statements upon request
  • Has a stringent budgeting process, the same used by Sanford Health and its related entities
  • Addresses privacy concerns of its donors by promptly removing the names of donors who request to be removed from our lists
  • Prepares an annual report.
